Rule of thumb: Coligny on day one, mid-island for regular beach days, north end for walks and history.
The vibe
Hilton Head is polished Lowcountry under live oaks: wide hard-pack sand, 70+ miles of pathways, and resorts tucked behind canopy roads. It is family-friendly without theme-park volume — especially once school is back and the paid-parking season eases.
All sand seaward of the high-water mark is public. Getting onto it often is not, unless you use a Town beach park (or have legitimate plantation / Beach Club access). Plan the park, not just “the beach.”
Best stretches & who they’re for
Town parks are your reliable on-ramps. Match the park to the day you want. The 2025–26 beach nourishment is finished — south-end sand is not a moving construction zone. Watch leftover Town-page boilerplate; the beach itself is open.

Fish Haul / Mitchelville
Port Royal Sound side at 124 Mitchelville Road Directions, with real history at Mitchelville. Come for walks and context, not classic Atlantic swim vibes. The signed Animals Prohibited Area at Fish Haul Creek is already law — year-round, all hours, about 600 feet from the public access, not the whole park.
Gated · know the fees
Harbour Town / Sea Pines
Beautiful and gated. Harbour Town Lighthouse is 149 Lighthouse Road Directions. A Sea Pines gate fee (~$10/day) is not the same as Beach Club access — don’t pay the gate expecting a Beach Club day.

On the sand
- No alcohol, no glass on the beach.
- Holes no deeper than 12 inches. Fill them at least 30 minutes before sunset.
- Turtle lights-out May 1–October 31: lights visible from the beach off or shielded 10 p.m.–6 a.m.
Off-season on Hilton Head
This is when the island feels most like itself — warm enough to use, quiet enough to breathe.
Sep–Oct · Still beach season
Water stays swimmable, oyster season energy kicks in, and nesting-season lights-out rules still matter for turtles. Crowds ease before winter hush.
Nov–Feb · Quiet value
Quieter beaches, golf and bike weather, and the best hotel/villa deals. Pack a layer; don’t write off sand time.
Practical perks
Paid park parking is tied to the Mar 1–Sep 7 peak window — outside it, fees are typically off. Summer’s no-dogs 10 a.m.–5 p.m. window ends Labor Day, Monday Sept. 7; after that, follow posted hours. The signed Fish Haul Creek Animals Prohibited Area is year-round.

Skip rumor apps and random flag photos. For Hilton Head, lean on the sources locals actually use:
- SCDES beach monitoring for water-quality advisories
- Town swim areas in season (typically Apr–Sep)
- Shore Beach Service flags (typically Mar–Oct) at staffed stretches
- Official rip current guidance — know the page before you need it
- After heavy rain, give swashes ~48 hours before you treat the water as a sure thing

Beach patrol
The number on the dune line
Hilton Head’s emergency markers sit on the dune line, numbered #1 at Braddock Cove (South Beach / Sea Pines) north to #134 at Fish Haul Creek, about a tenth of a mile apart. A letter after the number is a beach access, not extra distance — 59A is Coligny, between 59 and 60. Note that number when you sit down. Give it to 911, a highchair lifeguard, or a red Beach Patrol truck. Shore Beach Service patrols 13.5 miles year-round. Useful posts: 52A Alder Lane, 59A Coligny, 98 Burkes Beach, 102 Driessen, 105 Folly Field, 110 Islanders, 134 Fish Haul. Designated swim areas sit at 52A, 59A, 102, 105, and 110. Lettered posts are not mile markers. Sea Pines path numbers are a different set — use the dune-line number for 911.
Animals
No dogs 10 to 5 — and a signed pocket at Fish Haul
Summer animal hours run through Labor Day, Monday Sept. 7: no dogs on the beach 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other hours, leash or positive voice control. There is no Town-designated dog beach; Burkes runs the same clock. Separately, the Fish Haul Creek Animals Prohibited Area is already law — year-round, all hours, a signed zone about 600 feet from the Fish Haul public access, not the whole park. Town FAQ copy that it “will go into effect” is stale. Pick up waste. Fines and court costs can run up to $1,092.50.
Sea Pines
Forest trails, not beach horses
If you came for horses in the surf, this island will disappoint you on purpose. The public ride is Lawton Stables, 190 Greenwood Drive Directions, inside gated Sea Pines: a one-hour, walk-only western trail through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve — about 605 acres of palmetto, moss oaks, and fishing lakes, dedicated in 1971. Town code is blunter: riding or driving horses on Hilton Head beaches is unlawful, except an annual marsh tacky race. Trail rides are ages 8+, about $100, reservations required; check in 30 minutes early. Kids 18 months to 7 years, 65 lb max, get led pony laps at the animal farm — helmets mandatory. Closed Sundays. Casual visitors still pay the Sea Pines $10 daily gate, in effect since March 1, 2026, at Greenwood or Ocean Gate, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Book at lawtonstables.com or 843-671-2586.
Beachcombing
Fish Haul’s sound flats, then Burkes
Skip the secret-cove hunt. The stretch that actually produces is the north-end sound: Fish Haul Beach Park, 124 Mitchelville Road Directions, and neighboring Mitchelville, where Port Royal Sound lays a wide low-tide flat of shell hash, oysters, and driftwood. Wear water shoes — oyster is the local tax. Mid-island, Burkes Beach, 60 Burkes Beach Road Directions, is the less-picked Atlantic public access. Time it to low tide. Empty shells are the souvenir. Live sand dollars, starfish, occupied conchs, and any beach fauna stay put — Town code, fines up to $1,092.50. May 1 through October 31 is turtle season: nests staked, lights out 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., fill holes before you leave. A Sea Pines day pass is not a Town park; do not treat South Beach or Harbour Town as one.
Fossils
Black fossils on the sound flats
Hilton Head’s teeth are small, black, phosphate fossils in the shell hash — the Lowcountry look — not the white “fresh” teeth gift shops sell, and not a megalodon factory. Look at Fish Haul and Mitchelville on Port Royal Sound, the same wide low-tide flats as the shelling, along the swash and darker shell beds when the tide is out. Hunting Island is a different island. A Beaufort County ranger told the Island Packet the local hotspot is Sands Beach in Port Royal — also not Hilton Head. Statewide, a “reasonable amount” of fossil teeth may be collected above the low-water mark; below that needs a hobby license. There is no sourced Hilton Head trophy find to wave around.
